Consistency with Centers is key!

Hello Reader,

It's hard to teach guided reading groups when the rest of the class needs your attention.

During centers, are your students:

  • off task?
  • asking for help?
  • lacking confidence?
  • frustrated?
  • misbehaving?
When your students lack confidence about the task they are required to complete, they may show it in disruptive ways.

Here are some things to be mindful of when you are planning centers:

  • Target activities to your students' needs.
  • Target activities to your students' levels.
  • Be clear with your instructions and model.
  • Be clear about your expectations.
  • Plan consistent, familiar activities. ( This is important. There should be no surprises.)
  • New activities should be modeled and explained clearly ahead of time.
  • Repeat the above weekly.

Here's what one teacher said about our reading center activities:

I love that there are multiple options for centers that repeat unit after unit. It allows for consistency for students, and the teacher can focus on running small groups while students are engaged in learning activities independently.

We're here to help!

  • Once you have identified the phonics skills you are covering each week, intentionally prepare your targeted seatwork.
  • Each day, fill your group folders with their targeted seatwork that students can complete independently. TIP: Write student names on each seatwork page to prevent no-name papers and to keep track of who needs to use time more wisely, etc.
  • Be clear with instructions and expectations. Repeat weekly or even daily if needed at the start of class so there are no surprises for students.
  • Provide activities that students are familiar with so students are confident and ask fewer questions.
  • At the end of each day, remove the completed work, taking note of who is not getting work finished. Ask yourself: Is the work too difficult? Is the student distracted where seated? Make a plan that will help those students find more success.

This is why students and teachers love our bundled 919 pages of Print and GO engaging phonics seatwork activities!

This seatwork activities bundle includes 26 different products that can also be purchased separately.

Hello Reader, So here's the story. One busy morning before school, I let my hair go curly instead of styling it straight as usual. I thought it looked pretty good, so I went to school. No one said anything about my new style, good or bad, but I did get some second glances... The bell rang, and I opened the outside door to greet my 1st graders with a big smile. As many of you know, first graders notice everything new. James, in particular. And there he was, first in line, eager to start the...
